Hi,

The text on the painting "Spanish Lady" was taken from tradition by Joseph Campbell (1879-1944) and is the opening of his poem:

As I went out through Dublin City,
At the hour of twelve o´clock at night,
Who should I see but a Spanish lady,
Washing her feet by candle light.

First she washed them and then she dried them,
Over a fire of ambery coal,
In all my life I never did see,
A maid so neat about the sole.
