How was it Margaret Thatcher? The UK joined the EU on 1 Jan 1973 (Ted Heath was P.M.), and voted to remain as part of the EU in a referendum 5 June 1975 (Harold Wilson was PM)
Margaret Thatcher became PM 4 May 1979
