We did measure some things, Eliza, but the measures were simple and made sense - bread was 2 pounds of flour to a pint of liquid, with fresh yeast, and the salt was the amount that fits neatly in the middle of your palm. Nothing digital. Any weighing was on a balance scale, with a dish on one side and weights on the other - no possibility of it going wrong. (But useless for weighing treacle accurately to the nearest quarter-ounce.) To keep on topic, I don't remember using Nigella seeds except to produce more love-in-a-mist flowers.
