Thread Name: Lyr Req: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter)
Subject: ADD: Every Time We Say Goodbye (Cole Porter)
We're mostly musicians here, but our interests often go beyond the folk genre. Why force people to go elsewhere, if their interests sometimes lie beyond the folk realm? An occasional Cole Porter song can add another dimension to a folk performance.
As always, I'm sure Jim Dixon's transcription of the Mabel Mercer recording is perfect, but there's a verse in The Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter (by Robert Kimball, published by Knopf in 1983, page 256). cptsnapper posted the verse above, but here is the song all together.
EV'RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE (Cole Porter)
VERSE: We love each other so deeply That I ask you thins, sweetheart, Why should we quarrel ever, Why can't we be enough clever Never to part?
REFRAIN Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I die a little, Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little. Why the gods above me Who must be in the know, Think so little of me, They allow you to go. When you're near there's such an air Of spring about it, I can hear a lark somewhere Begin to sing about it. There's no love song finer, But how strange The change From major to minor, Ev'ry time we say goodbye, Ev'ry single time we say goodbye.
