While I have to admit that the evidence weighs heavily against the Pope, I continue this think that the Pope must have made the appointment because he believed and still believes it to be the right thing to do. Politically, the decision to appoint Barros was disastrous, and Pope Francis had nothing to gain from making the appointment.
