We call them coypu here in UK. I think we've more or less managed to eradicate them (escaped from a fur farm, I seem to remember) as especially in Norfolk they were damaging the banks of dykes and water channels. However, some maintained that they did good by clearing away the edges of reed beds, keeping the waterways clear.
They must be feeling a bit hot in their thick fur coats down in California!
