If you're talking about the bent-top, flat-back models, you shouldn't have to part with more than several hundred dollars. I have seen, heard really, an awful lot a variation in the quality of the sound. They are not very loud, but it's a nice tone if you don't have to worry much about volume. If you're talking about the carved-top models, I think they're overvalued. You can get a teens or 20's Gibson probably for a lot less money and it will do you better service as an instrument. The Martins are rarer, so they might be better for collector/investor purposes, but as always, play them and buy the one you like. Mandolin Brothers are fine experts, nice folks, and always have the premium models in perfect condition, but they do have the highest prices of any of the well-known stores. I'll be there at opening time if I win a big lottery.
