A country boy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm--
A good boy filled with bad ideas who really meant no harm.
He wrote to all his Facebook friends and set off on his mule
His mother cried as he rode out:
"Don't take your gun to school, son
Leave your gun at home, Bill
Don't take your gun to school.”

He checked his mail as he rode along; his gun hung by his side.
He walked into the classroom with his blue eyes full of pride.
He strode up to the teacher who’d said he was a fool,
And he forgot his mother's words:
"Don't take your gun to school, son
Leave your gun at home Bill
Don't take your gun to school.”

And in his rage young Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the teacher drew his gun and fired before he even saw.
As Billy Joe fell to the floor the students played it cool.
They all ignored his final words:
"Don't take your gun to school, son
Leave your gun at home, Bill
Don't take your gun to school.”

And now though fifty years have passed the laws have not been changed
A boy can get a gun though he’s unstable or deranged.
He's still too young to know a gun can’t make a jerk seem cool.
“I told you so,” his Mama said,
"Don't take your gun to school, son
Leave your gun at home, Bill
Don't take your gun to school.”
