The front page of the Columbus (Miss.) Commercial, Oct. 28, 1917, tells of an "old fiddlers' contest" attended by "more than a thousand people, representing two states." About 23 fiddlers too part. Noah Sanders, of McCrary, Miss., walked off with the first prize of $25 - about $450 in today's buying power.

The article lists the names of the tunes that were played. Not all of them are now identifiable:
