I know a folksinger who often appeared in Seattle that used two different names. One was his real (legal) name, and he used his other name when he performed in coffee houses. In years past, the Seattle musicians union forced it's members to NEVER perform anywhere for less money than the union minimum. Coffee houses paid much less, if at all … hence his "stage name."
