I am forced to pay for the British army to prance up and down.

We are forced to pay for the British army to defend the country. If it is going to be available when we need it then we have to pay for it in times of both war and peace. Prancing up and down is just an alternative to sitting twiddling their thumbs when there is no fighting to be done. The cost is the same either way.
