By the way - it's one of those things everyone knows so nobody tells you - you don't actually try to press Ctrl and the other keys simultaneously. With Ctrl, Shift or Alt (or indeed any combination of them), you press and hold the modifier key, then while holding it, type the required character. Apologies to the everyone who already knew this.

Once upon a time, operating systems had a Help feature which allowed you to look up useful information. However this was discontinued about 10 years ago and replaced by an Internet search, which tends to come up with a whole load of irrelevant stuff and is of no use whatsoever if you're offline. But, if you start your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox) and type "keyboard shortcuts" in the search box - identifiable by a magnifying glass symbol in the newer and worse versions - you will be directed to some long lists of fancy keyboard tricks, too many to remember but perhaps worth printing out and keeping handy.
