I remember hearing this song back in 1957 while at an international scout jamboree in the Atlas mountains of Fr. Morocco. Some of my fellow scoutmasters were from the UK and here's how they sang it:

There was a man, walked up and down,
To see where he could dine in town.
He walked into a restaurant place,
and sat himself with modest grace.
