Thread Name: Lyr Add: Thomas Muir (Jim McLean)
Subject: Lyr Add: POLITICAL MARTYRDOM OF THOMAS MUIR
I don't know if this had a tune? Any suggestions?
The style is of its time- but perhaps someone might adapt it to be sung nowadays?

‘A Song, Political Martyrdom of Thomas Muir, Esq written 1837’
Published in The Altar of Liberty (1842)

1. Immortal Patriotic Martyr
Robb’d and wrong’d in Freedom’s cause;
Tyrants have destroyed the charter
Of our freedoms and our laws.
We detest the Tory tyrants
Scourges fierce of former times;
We abhor their legal murders,
Massacres, and fiendish crimes.

CHORUS: Shade of Muir, immortal spirit,
Boast and glory of the free,
Bards shall sing his deeds of merit,
And their song shall deathless be.

2. Tory tyrants we abhor them,
Foes to truth and human joy,
The guiltless daily fall before them,
And the virtuous they destroy.
Muir, the virtuous Muir they murder’d
By a sentence far from just;
Still his judges and his jury
Fill our bosoms with disgust. CHORUS

3. Much of human ill he suffered,
In his country’s cause he fell --
Was on Freedom’s altar offered
Much we in his virtuous glory,
Human weal was all his aim,
And a Patriot which story
Has enrolled and deathless fame. CHORUS

4. Patriotic Muir, and daring-
Rous’d to tell the people’s wrongs
Like a meteor appearing,
Told what unto man belongs
It was criminal, great martyr!
To say mankind should be free;
They’ve destroyed our righteous charter.
They who wrong’d and murder'd thee! CHORUS

5. We will sing thy deeds of glory,
We will fight in Freedom’s cause;
We will curse the ruthless Tory,
Framer of Tyrannic Laws.
We will tread the paths of virtue,
We, as men, our rights will claim,
We, like thee, are foes to Tyrants,
Truth and Justice is our aim. CHORUS
