I know I'm about four years behind but I just stumbled across a mention of a poem written by James Hogg for his Jacobite Relics. But Hogg just did what Dick Gaughan later did to the Hogg version of Both Sides The Tweed. Actually I found an earlier version in John Yair's The Charmer Volume2 (1751) page262 which starts- What's the spring, breathing violet or rose. Yair only gives words -no tune but does specify that the tune to be used is Tweedside.
