Thread Name: Obit: trumpeter Roy Hargrove (1969-2018)
Subject: Obit: Roy Hargrove (1969 - 2018)
Younger than I, this one. It is enough to break your heart.

His commitment to American music and to the trumpet was legendary.
He was the sort of musician equally at home within
the confines of "straight-ahead" jazz,
the kind you have to be schooled and mentored over time, thoroughly,
in order to play it,
and the music of r-n-b and 'soul' recording artists.

The dark side, is that Roy Hargrove received both the good and the evil
from those around him, mentors or otherwise, in the business.

In his 20's, he was already using heroin. Cocaine would be added at some point.

These contributed significantly to the kidney disease that took his life before his 50th birthday. Hargrove has spent years requiring dialysis.
By the time he stopped using the 'hard stuff', the damage was done.

In the online media, the tributes are pouring in.
Eventually we will hear from Wynton Marsalis, who discovered Hargrove in
Hargrove's native Waco, Texas.
Right now I have yet to see a Marsalis statement. Of course Marsalis and Hargrove
were eight years apart in age,
so Marsalis was very much the elder brother.
It has got to hurt like hell,
when your little brother dies before you do.
