No. Usually "laud", with an acute accent somewhere. It's the western Mediterranean version of the Greek/Turkish "lavta". There is something in between called a "liauto". They are all like big bouzoukis, tending to get louder westwards and more sophisticated eastwards (the lavta player in our Middle Eastern group is Greek but plays a gorgeous Turkish one with microtonal fretting).
