Dates back at least to Zoroaster, the name is possibly cognate with Nordic Yule, but despite its indisputably pre-Islamic character, it only became an official public date in Iran in 2008 under the Islamic Republic (maybe as an up-yours to the Saudis? I'll see f I can find out).
