I have just seen the movie "The Favourite", about sex and political intrigue at the court of Queen Anne. A lot of it was dead accurate, and if they maybe played up the extent to which a cabal of women could dictate the affairs of state, they were also right to make it clear that they weren't doing it out of any altruistic motives.
