Actually Jim's message is exactly right, although the situation is presently more common with electric guitars than acoustics (e.g. Fender's "relic" series). However to my knowledge at least one acoustic guitar company makes a selling point of offering a range of "distress levels" for its newly made instruments - here: https://www.pre-warguitars.com/distress-levels/ . Ugh.
