I read a report on the Guardian website today about the rapid collapse of insect populations the world over. Insects are being hit by the double whammy of climate change and intensive agriculture, specifically in the latter case habitat destruction and the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. You don't necessarily have to accept the more apocalyptic prediction in the article, namely that insects will be wiped out in a hundred years, to understand how serious this is. Insects are at the heart of all terrestrial ecosystems, and the characterisation of what's happening to us already as a mass extinction of life in Earth is not too far-fetched. Climate change denial will soon prove to be the ultimate immorality.
