Try Ritchie's books of Scottish children's singing games, ""The Singing Street" and "The Golden City". I'm pretty sure what the Corries sang was nearly the same as the one he found in Edinburgh in the Fifties.

I doubt there's any evidence to locate its origins to any particular place in the British Isles.
