I don't think the Corries changed anything. They just sang it the way it was often done in Glasgow.

It's in this film, from Edinburgh in the 50s, by a group of girls from Gorgie/Dalry. I taught the recorder to a bunch of primary school girls there in the 1980s and they were still doing singing games.
