I must be the last person in the world to learn of
the death of Max Berrú, native of Ecuador,
and the oldest of all the members of the group Inti Illimani.

He died on 1 May 2018.
The previous year, Berrú had been diagnosed
with multiple myeloma of the bone marrow.
There were intense sessions of chemotherapy.
He carried on for as long as he could.

When he died, nearly one year ago,
he was seventy-four years old.

Between his diagnosis and the final stage of the illness,
he granted a Spanish-language interview online;
he was as blunt and outspoken as ever,
an extroverted personality who loved people,
and who still felt the sorrow
of relationships destroyed beyond repair.

"Yo he estado enfermo, y quién me ha llamado?
