Talking of the bright side and staring at the audience: there are some venues that have ultra-powerful spotlights so you can't see anyone beyond the front row, though you may appear to be staring at some paranoid person in the back row. Looking at your fingers may help to cut down the glare, as may singing/playing with eyes shut!
