Thread Name: should women sing when they do the ironing
Subject: RE: should women sing when they do the ironing
This thread was started to counter the discussion in the Chantey thread of women singing songs that historically are the purview of men, but history is good at (eventually) illuminating the stories of many women who did "men's work," they either hid in men's clothes or simply took on the job where they were barely remarked on and it never became a statistic to draw from until much digging into the record. The thread that spawned this one should have ended with the second post:

I think this is my last prejudice. I know they can sing them - but should they?
Anyone else got any strong opinions?

yes anyone should sing whatever they feel like. that's how we arrive a folk music. it a very democratic process.
The admission of a prejudice should also be a clue. Something the OP recognizes and considers something to remedy.
Should women architects/airline pilots/surgeons/nurses/teachers/truck drivers/heavy equipment operators/chefs/clerks/and all other careers sing?
