We sang this at school (London) in the 1950s from a book called The National Songbook (Songs from the nations of the UK). I don`t know whether it was translated from the Irish or if they were avoiding Irish Nationlism, but I prefer it to Danny Boy. We could do with reviving that concept of a shared heritage, but I fear it might deprive fashionable con singers of their incomes.
