Thread Name: Worst Movie ever
Subject: RE: Worst Movie ever
Way back in this thread, alanabit said that he can't watch "Gone With the Wind" because of the terrible acting. I can't agree with that. Clarke Gable was doing his usual macho man performance - very well. Leslie Howard delivered a very sensitive performance, although he was miscast. Olivier de Havilland was fine, and moving down the cast, Thomas Mitchell Ward Bond and Victor Jory all gave - at the very least - good performances, which brings us to Vivienne Leigh ( who won an Oscar for her performance ).
Now, if I had to guess, I would reckon that's it's Vivienne's performance - and she WAS the star of the movie - that alanabit didn't like but I bet he fell into the trap of believing that she was overacting in a self conscious way - particularly in the first part of the movie BUT BUT BUT! that was the character!
It was the character of Scarlett, at the beginning of the movie, who was overacting! Flirting, acting the little princess, putting on airs, over doing everything..to gain attention. But, again, that's what the character was like.
Of course, it could be argued that Vivienne was told to over do the flighty, silly young woman bit early in the story so it could be contrasted by the woman who has to grow up quickly when faced with the extreme change of fortune in her circumstances.
