Traditional versions are the ones that interest me Dick.
Try the beautiful Irish Language one, 'An Mhaigdean Mhara' (The Sea Maiden) about a man who marries a mermaid and settles down with her - we recorded a story version of this from Kerry Traveller, Mikeen McCarthy, set in his home locality - he called it 'The Mermaid of Filemore'
Child Ballad, 'Clerk Colvil' tells the story of a fresh-water mermaid who kills her would-be lover with a poisoned kiss
'Maid on the Shore' (based on the Broomfield Hill' story) has the would be seduced woman singing the captain and ship's crew to sleep, robbing them of all their gear and escaping 'virgo intacta', giving them the wo fingers as she goes
Bert Lloyd used to sing one of the best versions of The Mermaid (Child 289) I ever heard, with a superb tune - beats the rollicking one Miss Pringle bashed out on the school piano any day
Jim Carroll
