Evening comes so early
The fire in the kitchen's burning low
All along the mountain
The dogs are making footprints in the snow
They go in circles through the pine trees
Like some lonesome traveler looking for a town
Bread is rising in the oven
Stand beside me, watch December coming down

The Northeast wind is driving
The squalling snow along the frozen ground
Staring out the window

That this tired world could look so clean and bright

And it's all right to dream of planting
Even though last summer's ground seems old and worn
Underneath the snow the seeds of spring are waiting like a baby to be born.

The northeast wind…
