"Speaking the truth to someone like Trump" -- Of course, he wasn't speaking to trump; he was whispering, so to speak, to a third party, in accordance with his duties. To be fair, though, I don't think any head of state would be overly-pleased with such extreme criticism of himself and his government from an ambassador, and if it's made public, it can't be ignored. The ambassador had no choice but to resign.
