There's a saying sometimes shared by Florida natives:

"The best thing ever invented for Floridians was the window screen. It made it possible to live here.

The worst thing ever invented for Floridians was the air conditioner. It made it possible for anyone to live here."

(That's not meant to imply that all native Floridians willingly live in 95° temperatures with 90% humidity without air conditioning. We're not stupid. And we're only mildly resentful of transplants. We generally try to discourage them by emphasizing the dangers of alligators, snakes the size of telephone poles, insect-born diseases, and (the latest thing) beaches full of flesh-eating bacteria, not by refusing to sell them air conditioners.)
