Thread Name: Review: The High Kings- opinion.
Subject: RE: Review: The High Kings- opinion.
I heard these guys a year or two ago at the Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival, where they present a wide range of styles from very traditional, pop, rock, local and international.
Clancy & Makem, and (later just Tommy Makem) were an annual staple of this fest. There are many of their fans who skimmed the top of what these icons did, without understanding, or caring about the roots. It seems like the High Kings cater to that strata of fans to whom Irish song is a couple times a year, or only in pubs experience. The cliche repertoire turned me off. I walked out on "Fields of Athenry" which was covered by 5 other groups that same weekend. There's skill, there's musicianship, but the format is what pop culture thinks of as trad, not what actual traditionalists like. But we're then minority.
I much preferred Makem & Spain, Robbie O'Connell or Aiofe Clancy.
