I am old enough to remember the first moon landing being used to divert the attention from the fact that American planes were pouring burning petrol on the Vietnamese People - a prestige exercise in one-upmanship with The Soviets
Didn't work though - we continued to take to the streets and watched with a degree of satisfaction as the helicopters winched up the last of the Embassy Staff a few years later
