I'm about to write a paper 'Burlesquing the Ballad' and this will be the first song under scrutiny as it is the earliest of the songs I will be studying, that became a burlesque and then the burlesque became a serious song again. As Malcolm stated way back up the thread it can be traced back to the seventeenth century and didn't become burlesqued until about 1800.
