Thread Name: Ewan MacColl - any first-hand anecdotes?
Subject: RE: Ewan MacColl - any first-hand anecdotes?
"Just facts Jim; simply facts from the official records -"
Are you suggesting that everybody knows Ewan as Jimmy Miller and and his wishes to chnage his mane (for very real and important reasons) should be ignored
Does that mean tat we now refer to the artist formally nown as Bob Dylan as Robert Zimmerman ad maybe start using names like Archie Leach and Ethel Gumm
This is both ridiculous and highly disrespectful to an undeniably great artist whose contribution to the pleasure and understanding of the most important of our folk arts is way above most
It really is nonsense like woul make a lauhging stock of our music had wee managed to attract enough people
We certainly never will if this is how we behave
The facts are that Ewan changed his name, everybody knows him as Ewan MacColl other than the ageing few who choose not to and if you mentioned Jimmy Milller to those singing his songs and buyning his still easily available albums, they wouldn't have a clue who you are referring to
You are living in a long discarded past - I expect a chorus of "Wee'll Meet Again" to let rip any minute
Sorry - no wonder that today's folkies have forgotten what folk songs is
Sadly

'Balloon rigging' was one of the ground staff occupations at military airports, a part of installing defences against air attacks
In that period, Ewan took numerous jobs in order to support his family while also working with Theatre Workshop - not only am I interested, but I've read extensively on Theatre Workshop and the different ways those involved supported themselves
There are several good books on it
