"The sweetest sounds I'll ever hear
Are still inside my head
The kindest words I'll ever know
Are waiting to be said
The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see
And the dearest love in all the world
Is waiting somewhere for me"

words and music by Richard Rodgers

This wistful song has long been attached to the
Rodgers-and-Hammerstein Cinderella musical, but
it was written later, and did not belong in Cinderella.

Richard Rodgers wrote the song for No Strings,
the first stage piece he wrote after
his lyricist Oscar Hammerstein III had died.
And the whole musical, including this song,
was a vehicle for Diahann Carroll.

Whether on Broadway,
in film Claudine),
or on television,

Diahann Carroll made show-biz history.
Rest in peace.
