I was the lyrics editor of the Rise Again Songbook, which was published in 2015. Here is our entry for the song, to be found in the "Play" Chapter on Page 211.

Editor Peter Blood says the original song is in French, but I don't know that I agree with that. The Spanish and English songs share a tune with the French song, which may indeed be older. I took one year of Spanish on Saturdays in eighth grade in 1961-62, and learned the song in Spanish then - I think my teacher said it came from Argentina. I didn't learn the English song until maybe ten years ago.
