Well I know Scilly quite well. The exotic plantings are largely in the Abbey Gardens on Tresco and to a lesser extent in private gardens. I happen to love beautiful gardens and I see nothing wrong with growing whatever will grow and which is aesthetically pleasing. Gardens and cathedrals are what I make a beeline for wherever I go. Like everywhere else, on Scilly escapes from cultivation can be a nuisance. There are non-native daffodils everywhere but, generally no-one seems to complain. That garlicky three-cornered leek is everywhere, and that's a bit repressive, but I imagine that it wasn't deliberately introduced. It invaded my garden for the first time last year. Scilly has lots of wild places where only native plants hold sway. A walk round St Agnes and Gugh in late spring is a joy. Don't miss the amazing ice cream at the camp site on St Agnes. I stopped reading your piece when you chuntered out the utter nonsense that "God created evolution." Sheesh.
