I suspect that many of the songs that Cecil Sharp found in the Appalachians were of Irish origin, but he claimed that they were of English origin. This is a man who thought that lowland Scotland and England were, culturally speaking, essentially the same, after all. I wouldn't be surprised if he purposely overlooked material of clearly Irish origin.
