Interesting. I did a search in our catalog & found two short stories called The Sin Eater. One by Lewis Nordan is in the book Welcome to the Arrow-Catch Fair. It looks like it's set in the south. The other is by Margaret Atwod in Dancing Girls and Other stories. From the opening paragraphs I know it addressing a Welsh custom. I'll try to read & maybe be able to report back later.
