The Wikipedia entry for Wilfred Pickles says that his regional accent was chosen by the BBC as a deliberate attempt to make it more difficult for Nazis to impersonate BBC broadcasters. At least it gave a chance for someone, who didn't sound like they had a plum in their mouth, to break into old school tie establishmrnt.
