I must be getting old, because I used to find the semi operatic rendition of the song in the film a bit cheesy, but watching it again recently, I find it does seem to work. Considering what was going on in 1945, you also have excuse the fact that much of it was not actually filmed in Scotland, but through great editing you would never know.
