I believe he said in the record notes on Live, Between the Breaks; that he needed to make sure he left pauses in the lyrics where he could take a breath; that he hadn't put any in that song. That may be some of what you were hearing. I met him several times, but didn't know him well enough to know if he had any serious respiratory issues or not.
