True aran sweaters were knitted from wool "in the grease"

I read somewhere that lanolin (it is an alcohol) is exothermic in the presence of water. Remove the grease and there is no warming effect. Indeed it was said that gillies wearing woolen socks would dip their booted feet in a burn before tramping the moors.
