When I was growing up, we believed that we would be blown up every day by the Russians in a nuclear holocaust. I have taken them a day at a time ever since. It is a pity that, thanks to George W. Bush, the next generation will have to return to that stupid childhood fear, due to the coming new arms race. There is a decadal generation that was freed from that fear, and the masters of war are closing in again. I am sorry for the next generation: I had hoped we might have worked harder towards ridding them of that prospect, given how terrible it was the first time around -- even if it did make me grateful for each new day.
