Man, I finally got to see this film and I am just tickled. Robert Johnson at the Crossroads and the Sirens singing white gospel; Cyclops branded with a burning cross, and the pride of adventure brought back to earth by a stubborn woman. I think there numnerous threads that could be called straight palimpsest over Homer in the film, although I can see why Peter's sense of depth and accuracy were offended. But coloring it over in the tones of Depression-era Mississippi was a stroke of genius, and they pulled it off successfully in spite of some meretricious bits.

Absolutely loved it. My BBW had to keep kicking me to stop me from singing along.
