The casters referred to here in connection with Keelmen were the men who worked on keelboats on the Tyne and Wear who shovelled the coal from the keelboat into the collier ships. Keels carried coal down river and then the coal was cast into the waiting ship through rectangular open ports cut into the collier's topside planking.
