In the 1900's, it became more frequent for published accounts
by American Indians themselves to set the record straight.

One such version actually spoke of
a White Buffalo Calf Woman.
She would appear to an unsuspecting man all by himself
out in the wilderness.
If his motives were not pure, she would consume him and destroy him,
supernatural being that she was.
If he were worthy, he would receive her blessing and her protection.
