Stromboli was presumably going boom regularly back in Homeric times, and you can see why you'd put it in a story. I found a video on YouTube a few days ago of the explosion of Whakaari/White Island in New Zealand, taken from the tour boat that had left it a few minutes before. Its primary function was as a central high court. Neolithic Britain was an organized enough society to need one. Major sessions might have been seasonally timed.
